Hieromartyr
Priest (not canonized) Paul (Pavel) Florensky, Priest
1882 — 1937
Also known as: Павел Александрович Флоренский
Priest Pavel Florensky — an eminent religious philosopher, theologian, mathematician, and scientist, executed in 1937; despite widespread popular veneration, he has not been officially canonized by the Moscow Patriarchate owing to forced testimony given under interrogation.
IMPORTANT HONEST WARNING ON CANONIZATION: despite enormous popular veneration of Fr. Pavel as a thinker and martyr, the Synodal Commission on Canonization of Saints of the Moscow Patriarchate has NOT officially glorified him among the New Martyrs. According to Hegumen Andronik (Trubachev), Florensky's grandson and the leading advocate for his canonization, the Commission regards as disqualifying the confessions he gave under interrogation while his family was threatened (Florensky took responsibility for a fabricated "National-Fascist Center," thereby protecting some 70 colleagues from further persecution) — supporters of his canonization view this as an act of Christian self-sacrifice, while the Commission formally treats it as "false self-testimony" that precludes glorification under current criteria. His 1959 rehabilitation was a legal, not an ecclesiastical, act, and is not equivalent to canonization. The matter remains a subject of open church debate. Given this, the three previous dates (June 29, March 12, October 7) do not correspond to any real feast — the correct date, the date of execution, is given in the biography but has NOT been entered into the feast-day field, since no official commemoration exists.
Pavel Alexandrovich Florensky was born January 9, 1882, near Yevlakh (present-day Azerbaijan). He received a wide-ranging education — graduating from the physics-mathematics faculty of Moscow University and the Moscow Theological Academy; he was ordained priest in 1911. One of the most original religious thinkers of the Russian Silver Age, author of the foundational work "The Pillar and Ground of the Truth," works on the philosophy of the cult and iconology (the theory of reverse perspective), and also a working polymath scientist — engaged in electrical engineering and dielectric physics, and worked at the Soviet State Institute for the Study of Permafrost in the years preceding his arrest.
He was repeatedly arrested from the late 1920s; in 1933 he was sentenced to 10 years in the camps, serving time in the Far East (BAMLag), then at Solovki, where he continued scientific work (notably on extracting iodine from seaweed). On November 25, 1937, a special NKVD troika of Leningrad Oblast sentenced him to death; he was executed December 8, 1937, near Leningrad (sources vary between Sandarmokh and Toksovo), and is buried in a mass grave at Levashovo.
No feast date is given, owing to the absence of official canonization by the Moscow Patriarchate.
