Hieromartyr Nicomedes of Rome

NOTE: the saint is distinct from the much larger 4th-century group of Martyrs of Nicomedia (from the city of Nicomedia) — the similarity of name/toponym often leads to their confusion; worth verifying no cross-references exist in the database.

Hieromartyr Nicomedes, a Roman presbyter, at the funeral of Martyr Felicula openly refused to sacrifice to idols, confessing the Christian faith. For this he was beaten to death with lead-weighted scourges ("plumbatae"). His relics rest in the Basilica of Santa Prassede on the Esquiline Hill in Rome; Pope Boniface V later built a memorial basilica in his honor on the Via Nomentana.

His feast is kept on September 15/28.
