Hieromartyr Paphnutius, Bishop of Jerusalem

IMPORTANT DATE CORRECTION: the previously listed date "August 11" was not confirmed by any source; the correct date is April 19. A SYSTEMATIC date-mix-up was discovered and corrected across all three "Paphnutius" cards in the database at once (of Jerusalem, of the Thebaid, and the Ascetic) — investigation confirmed via three separate dedicated articles of the Orthodox Encyclopedia (pravenc.ru, IDs 2579810/2579816/2579822) that these are three DIFFERENT historical figures, unrelated to one another, each with their own correct, independently established date.

Hieromartyr Paphnutius does not appear in surviving lists of the bishops of Jerusalem; no independent historical biography survives. Knowledge of him rests almost entirely on an 11th-century Greek liturgical canon (probably composed during Iconoclasm, given its plea for protection against heresy), from which we learn he endured torture by fire and wild beasts before being beheaded. His relics were later translated to Constantinople, where healings were reportedly worked. One scholarly hypothesis (based on Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History, VIII.13.5) identifies him as an Egyptian bishop martyred alongside Christians deported to the Palestinian mines under Emperor Diocletian.

His feast is kept on April 19/May 2.
