Righteous Holy Righteous David the King and Prophet

Righteous King David — the psalmist, second king of Israel, from whose line the Messiah was prophesied to come.
Holy Righteous David the King and Prophet was the second king of the united Kingdom of Israel, the youngest (eighth) son of Jesse of the tribe of Judah, born in Bethlehem. Anointed by the Prophet Samuel in his youth, he became famous for slaying the giant Goliath. He reigned c. 1010–970 BC, made Jerusalem his capital and spiritual center, and brought the Ark of the Covenant there.
He authored most of the Psalter, divinely-inspired hymns central to Orthodox worship. Despite grave personal sins (the murder of Uriah, adultery with Bathsheba), he became the model of sincere repentance (Psalm 50/51). Christ was prophesied to descend from the House of David, a lineage fulfilled through Righteous Joseph the Betrothed.
The Church commemorates David on December 26/January 8, together with Joseph the Betrothed and the Apostle James, Brother of the Lord, honoring their kinship with the Savior according to the flesh.
