Righteous Holy Righteous Matrona of Moscow

St. Matrona of Moscow (born Matrona Dimitrievna Nikonova) was born around 1881 in the village of Sebino, Tula Province, into a poor peasant family, blind from birth. From childhood she displayed gifts of clairvoyance and healing, drawing sufferers from the surrounding region. At seventeen she lost the use of her legs.

Despite severe physical infirmity, she led an intensely active spiritual life, receiving dozens of visitors daily, offering guidance, comfort, and healing through prayer. She lived through the Revolution, Civil War, and Soviet-era persecution of the Church, moving between temporary lodgings without a permanent home, spending her final years in Shchodnya near Moscow.

She reposed on 2 May 1952, having foretold the day of her death, and was buried at Danilovskoye Cemetery in Moscow. Popular veneration never ceased after her death; in 1998 her relics were uncovered and translated to the Convent of the Intercession (Pokrovsky Monastery). She was locally glorified in 1999 and canonized for general Church veneration in 2004. She is among the most beloved saints of contemporary Russia, with thousands of pilgrims visiting her relics daily seeking healing and intercession.
