Saint Dionysius of Suzdal — archbishop elected Metropolitan of Kiev and All Rus' in 1384, who died in captivity in Kiev.
Saint Dionysius, Archbishop of Suzdal, Nizhny Novgorod, and Gorodets, headed the Suzdal diocese from 1382. In 1384, amid disputes over the Moscow metropolitanate, he was elected Metropolitan of Kiev and All Rus', but on his return journey was detained in Kiev by the Lithuanian prince and imprisoned.
He died in captivity in Kiev on 15 October 1385, never having taken up his metropolitan office. He is venerated as a hierarch who steadfastly endured persecution for the sake of church service.
