Hieromartyr Eusebius of Samosata — ally of St. Basil the Great, persecuted by the Arians, killed by a roof tile thrown from above.
Hieromartyr Eusebius, Bishop of Samosata (d. c. 379–380), was a fierce defender of Nicene orthodoxy during the Arian persecutions under Emperor Valens. He became bishop of the Syrian city of Samosata in 361. He firmly upheld the Nicene confession, for which he was repeatedly deposed and exiled to Thrace.
A close friend and ally of St. Basil the Great, with whom he corresponded extensively in the anti-Arian struggle. After Valens' death he returned to his see and continued ordaining Orthodox bishops in place of exiled Arians.
He was martyred at Dolichê near Samosata: while consecrating an Orthodox bishop, an Arian woman dropped a roof tile on his head, mortally wounding him. Dying, he forgave his killer in imitation of Christ.
