Venerable Euthymius the Athonite — Georgian monk, translator, co-founder of Iviron Monastery on Athos, who laid the foundations of Georgian literary culture.
Venerable Euthymius the Athonite (of Iviron; c. 955 – c. 1028) was a Georgian monk, scholar, and translator, one of the founders of Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos. Nephew of St. John-Tornikios, Iviron's founder, he was sent as a child hostage to Constantinople, where he received a superb Greek education.
Joining his father on Athos, he took monastic vows and devoted his life to translating Scripture, liturgical texts, and patristic writings from Greek into Georgian — over fifty works in all, laying the foundations of Georgian literary culture. After his father's death he served as hegumen of Iviron for twelve years, then resigned to devote himself fully to translation.
He died in 1028 after falling from a mule en route to Constantinople. Venerated in the Georgian and Russian Churches among the Athonite Fathers.
