The Synaxis of Tambov Saints commemorates those whose lives and spiritual labors were tied to the Tambov region of Russia. Established in 1988 with the blessing of Patriarch Pimen, in the year the Russian Church marked the millennium of the Baptism of Rus, the feast falls on July 28 (Old Style) / August 10 (New Style). The synaxis is headed by St. Pitirim of Tambov (1644–1698), the diocese's second bishop, who firmly established Orthodoxy in this frontier land. It also gathers hierarchs such as Theophan the Recluse, a former Bishop of Tambov, and Serapion of Sarai; venerable monastics including Ambrose of Optina, Theodore of Sanaksar, Silouan the Athonite (born in the Tambov village of Shovskoye), and St. Seraphim of Sarov; the righteous warrior St. Theodore Ushakov, the celebrated admiral who ended his days at Sanaksar Monastery; and locally venerated Tambov ascetics — Martha, Daria and Seraphima of Sezenovo, Hilarion of Troekurovo, and others.
