Righteous Theodore II ('the Good'), Bishop of Tver

St. Theodore II ("the Good"), Bishop of Tver, was born in the town of Kashin. In 1342 he was consecrated Bishop of Tver by Metropolitan Theognostus. His episcopate coincided with relentless feuding among the Tver princes, which drove residents to flee to other cities; Theodore repeatedly worked to reconcile the warring princes. He adorned the cathedral of Tver — commissioning bronze doors (1344), frescoing the altar (1349), and installing a gilded cross (1353). His generosity toward the poor earned him the popular epithet "the Good." Worn down by the princely strife, in 1358 he asked to be released from his episcopal duties, but at the urging of St. Alexius of Moscow continued to serve. In 1360 he retired to the Otroch Monastery in Tver, where he frescoed the Church of the Presentation. He reposed on March 20, 1367, and was buried in Tver's Transfiguration Cathedral. He is glorified as a hierarch-saint and is commemorated in the Assembly of Tver Saints.
