Venerable Gabriel of Lesnovo

Venerable Gabriel of Lesnovo was a Bulgarian hermit-ascetic of the 10th–11th centuries, counted among the four great Bulgarian desert-dwellers together with Saints John of Rila, Prochorus of Pčinja, and Joachim of Osogovo. After his parents' death left him a substantial inheritance, he renounced worldly life and marriage, withdrawing to the wilderness near Mount Osogovo by the town of Zletovo (present-day North Macedonia). Settling on Lesnovo Mountain, he lived in strict fasting, prayer, and solitude, and was granted gifts of clairvoyance and healing. A monastic community gathered around his place of asceticism, which grew into the renowned Lesnovo Monastery. The monastery flourished especially in the 14th century, when Serbian Tsar Stefan Dušan restored and richly endowed it, building a church dedicated to Saint Gabriel. His relics rested long in the monastery he founded; part were later transferred to Tarnovo by Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Asen II. The Church commemorates him on January 15/28.
