Venerable
Venerable George Limniotes (of the Lake), Confessor
VIII век, † ок. 716–717 (по другой датировке — ок. 730–732)
Also known as: Георгий Лимниот, Георгий Озерник, Георгий Лимнеот, George the Limniote
A monk of Mount Olympus in Bithynia who suffered for the veneration of icons in the early iconoclast period: at the age of 95 his nose was cut off and his head burned, and he died soon after.
George Limniotes ("of the lake") lived in the eighth century and spent many years as a monk on Mount Olympus in Bithynia. When Emperor Leo III the Isaurian (717–741) persecuted the venerators of icons, the elderly monk denounced his impiety. The 95-year-old was tortured — his nose was cut off and his head burned — and he died in prayer.
The Russian Church calendar dates his death to about 716, while the Orthodox Encyclopedia gives about 717 or 730–732 and notes that scholars doubt such cruelty under Leo III, as harsh punishments of monks are attested only under Constantine V. A short synaxarion life and an anonymous encomium survive. The Russian Church venerates him as a venerable confessor, the Greek Church as a venerable martyr.
