Venerable
Venerable Naum of Radonezh
XIV в.
Also known as: Наум Радонежский, Наум, ученик прп. Сергия
One of the early disciples of St Sergius of Radonezh, of whose life almost nothing is known; his name is preserved in the account of a miraculous appearance of St Sergius during the siege of the Trinity monastery in the Time of Troubles. He is venerated in the Synaxis of the Saints of Radonezh.
According to church tradition, Venerable Naum of Radonezh (of the Trinity monastery) was one of the first disciples to join St Sergius of Radonezh in the wilderness. No details of his life survive: he is not named among the disciples in the Life of St Sergius, nor in the Nikon Chronicle.
His name is known from the account by Avraamy Palitsyn, cellarer of the Trinity-St Sergius monastery, of the siege of the monastery by Polish-Lithuanian forces in the Time of Troubles, later included in St Dimitry of Rostov's Menaion. St Sergius appeared to the sexton Irinarch and said that he had sent three of his disciples, Micah, Bartholomew and Naum, to Moscow to hold a service of prayer there. The besiegers saw the three elders but could not overtake them, and on the same day an elder leading twelve carts of bread appeared in besieged Moscow, saying, "We are all from the house of the Most Holy and Life-giving Trinity."
St Naum is commemorated in the Synaxis of the Saints of Radonezh on 6 (19) July and in the Synaxis of the Moscow Saints.
