Venerable Pyrrhus (Piros) of Breti

Saint Pyrrhus (Piros) of Breti was one of the Thirteen Syrian (Assyrian) Fathers who came in the mid-6th century from Cappadocia and Mesopotamia to Eastern Georgia (Iberia) under St. John of Zedazeni to strengthen the Christian faith and found Georgian monasticism. With his teacher's blessing, Pyrrhus preached in the region of Kartli, where on the left bank of the Dvanistskali River, near the village of Breti, he founded a monastery with a church dedicated to the Great Martyr George. Because of his deep repentance and constant weeping, contemporaries called him "the divine image of lamentation." He reposed in the 6th century; his relics rest in the monastery he founded at Breti, which also preserves his icon and frescoes of the Syrian Fathers. His feast is kept with St. John of Zedazeni and his other disciples.
