Venerable Theoctist of Serbia (Stefan Dragutin)

Venerable Theoctist (in the world Stefan Dragutin) of Serbia was a king of the Nemanjić dynasty who took monastic vows at the end of his life. Born before 1253, eldest son of King Stefan Uroš I and Queen Helen of Anjou, he seized the Serbian throne in 1276 after rebelling against his father, then abdicated under noble pressure in 1282 in favor of his brother Milutin, retaining the appanage lands of Srem, Mačva, and Braničevo. He devoted his remaining years to charity and church-building. Before death he received monastic tonsure as Theoctist and, by tradition, prayed daily in a grave he dug himself in preparation for death. He reposed on March 12, 1316. Together with his brother Stefan Milutin and their mother, Queen Helen of Serbia, he is venerated by the Serbian Orthodox Church as an example of humility and renunciation of worldly power.
