Hierarch Urban of Langres

St. Urban of Langres was elected the sixth bishop of Langres in Gaul in 374 by unanimous decision of clergy and laity. Little reliable information survives about his episcopate. In Western folk tradition, St. Urban, like his namesake Urban I of Rome, is venerated as patron of vintners — a legend tells of his miraculous concealment in a vineyard from persecutors, which is why the images of the two Saints Urban were often confused in medieval iconography. He died around 390. His main feast is April 2; local Langres tradition holds January 23 to be the actual date of his death.
