Hieromartyr Vigilius of Trent

Hieromartyr Vigilius of Trent was born into a noble Roman patrician family and educated in Athens, where, by tradition, he was a friend of St. John Chrysostom. From 380 he held the episcopal see of Trent (Tridentum) in northern Italy. He carried out missionary work among the pagans of Brescia and Verona, and later in the Val Rendena valley. He corresponded with St. Ambrose of Milan and sent relics and reports of martyrs to St. John Chrysostom in Constantinople. He suffered a martyr's death, stoned by enraged pagans after he destroyed an idol of Saturn. He died in 405.
