Hierarch Zeno of Verona

St. Zeno, Bishop of Verona, northern Italy, appears to have come from North Africa — this is suggested both by certain features of his writings and by later tradition. He occupied the episcopal see of Verona in the mid-to-late 4th century; the exact dating of his episcopate and death varies in the sources (both 371 and 380 are given). He became known as an energetic preacher who zealously combated the Arian heresy and remnants of paganism in his diocese, and worked for the conversion of Jews. A collection of more than ninety of his sermons (tractates) on various theological and moral subjects survives to this day, of considerable value as a monument of early Christian Latin homiletics. The sources contain no reliable evidence of a martyr's death — he is venerated as a hierarch, not a hieromartyr.
